We would like to inform our parent community that the PSLE scores presented here have been sourced from the official MOE channel, specifically the School Finder, using the PSLE score range for the year 2022.

Similar to previous years, it’s essential to understand that fulfilling a school’s indicative cut-off point does not guarantee admission, and this criteria can vary from one year to the next.

Full Subject Based Banding

The Ministry of Education (MOE) has made changes to the secondary school streams starting from 2024. The Express, Normal (Academic) [N(A)], and Normal (Technical) [N(T)] streams will be removed.

Under the new system, students will be posted to secondary schools based on three Posting Groups: Posting Groups 1, 2, and 3. The PSLE score ranges for these groups will be mapped from the existing N(T), N(A), and Express streams, respectively. The Posting Groups will be used solely for the purpose of admitting students to secondary school and to guide their initial subject levels in Secondary One.

Advertisements

The use of Posting Groups in Full SBB represents a significant departure from the current stream-based system, signaling a transition to a more adaptable and personalized approach. Posting Groups are solely utilized for admitting students to secondary schools and determining their initial subject levels at the start of Secondary One. Once enrolled, students will be placed in mixed form classes with peers from various Posting Groups. Approximately one-third of their curriculum time will be dedicated to taking common subjects together, such as Art, Character and Citizenship Education (CCE), Design and Technology (D&T), Food and Consumer Education (FCE), Music, and Physical Education (PE).

With Full SBB, eligible students will enjoy greater flexibility in selecting subjects at different levels based on their individual strengths and learning needs. They will also have access to a wider range of subject offerings and programs. Although the three Posting Groups align with the PSLE Score ranges of the existing N(T), N(A), and Express streams, they will not restrict students’ secondary and post-secondary experiences or pathways, unlike the current academic streams.

The implementation of three Posting Groups ensures that schools remain inclusive and diverse, accommodating students with varying learning profiles. It also provides opportunities for students to interact with peers of different interests and backgrounds.

Mixed form classes

Once students enter secondary school, they will be grouped into mixed form classes comprising students from different Posting Groups and will have opportunities to interact and learn with peers of different backgrounds, strengths, and interests.

PSLE Achievement Level explanation (AL Score):

Previously, we provided a comprehensive overview of the PSLE Achievement Level (AL) scoring system. Let’s revisit the key points. The PSLE Achievement Level (AL) scoring system is used to evaluate students’ performance at the end of their six years of primary education. Each subject is assigned an AL points ranging from AL1 to AL8. These scores are then aggregated, with the highest possible score being 4 (representing AL1 for all four subjects) and the lowest possible score being 32 (representing AL8 for all four subjects). The AL points reflect the students’ overall performance in English, Mathematics, Science, and Mother Tongue. The PSLE AL points play a crucial role in determining the secondary schools that students are eligible to apply for. Students with lower total AL points enjoy a wider range of school options.

Tie-break in the PSLE score

The PSLE achievement level score brings about a fair and transparent process for student admissions. In cases where two pupils achieve the same score and compete for the last available spot in a school, tie-breakers are implemented to ensure a smooth allocation process. Firstly, priority is given based on citizenship, with Singaporean citizens having the highest preference. This means that Singaporean students will be admitted before Singapore permanent residents and international students. The next tie-breaker considers the pupil’s list of school choices, giving priority to those who have ranked the school higher on their preference list. (Make sure you have arranged your school of choices in correct order). If the tie persists even after considering these factors, computerised balloting is utilized to determine the final allocation.

What is the PSLE Cut OFF Point?

The score of the last pupil admitted in the previous year serves as the school’s cut-off point (COP). The cut-off points could be ranged from 6 to 30. While the score ranges may fluctuate annually based on a cohort’s PSLE results, we observed that the indicative PSLE score ranges have remained relatively stable in recent years, with fluctuations typically limited to 1 to 3 AL.

What is SAP School?

SAP, an acronym for Special Assistance Plan, represents a specialized educational program tailored for students who excel in their mother tongue (Chinese). These exceptional institutions are widely recognized as SAP schools.

Though commonly referred to as Chinese Schools, it is important to note that SAP schools exclusively focus on Chinese language education, omitting offerings in Malay or Tamil. Consequently, SAP caters to students who demonstrate proficiency in both English and Chinese. (Bilingual)

Advertisements

What sets SAP schools apart is the augmented support they receive from the Singaporean government. This enhanced funding facilitates a more comprehensive learning experience, encompassing not only the mastery of the (Chinese) mother tongue but also an appreciation for (Chinese) culture. With increased resources at their disposal, SAP schools can procure additional educational materials and organize enriching activities, such as calligraphy classes.

In essence, SAP schools enjoy a distinct advantage due to their heightened resources. As a result, they consistently emerge as premier educational institutions in Singapore, renowned for their academic excellence.

Moreover, SAP schools provide students with an unparalleled opportunity to develop their bilingual abilities. By incorporating Mandarin as the medium of instruction for select subjects, students further hone their language proficiency, unlocking the benefits of bilingualism. Additionally, these schools offer exciting exchange programs, fostering cultural immersion and facilitating invaluable connections with educational institutions in China or HongKong.

HCL (Higher Chinese Language) advantage

In the context of SAP schools, it is important to note that pupils who have passed Higher Chinese Language (HCL) will retain a posting advantage for admission. In cases where pupils with the same PSLE score are competing for limited spots in a particular SAP school, those with higher HCL grades will be given priority. The order of preference is distinction, merit, and pass. It is worth mentioning that this posting advantage applies before the tie-breakers.

Advantages of the new PSLE AL (Achievement Level) Scoring System

A Leap Forward from the T-Score Era

In the dynamic landscape of Singapore’s education, the AL scoring system has emerged as a transformative force, revolutionizing the assessment of primary school students’ academic performance. As we stand here in 2023, let’s reflect on the advantages of this system and how it compares to the traditional T-score method, which dominated Singapore’s educational realm for years.

One of the advantages of the AL grading system is that there is a greater margin of error in the lower tiers. This is made possible by the broadening and expanding of the grading bands. Let’s take a closer look at an example to understand this concept:

Advertisements

Under the T-score system, a student scoring 34 in Maths would have been assigned an E grade. However, in the AL system, their score would be categorized as an AL 7, similar to a student scoring 42 who would have previously received a D grade. This example illustrates the flexibility of the AL system, allowing students to focus on improving weaker subjects while leveraging stronger subjects to boost their overall scores.

Mathematics T-score System (Grade) AL System (AL Score)
Score: 34 E AL 7
Score: 42 D AL 7

By offering more prospects in the lower tiers, the AL grading system provides students with the freedom to address their weaknesses and concentrate on areas that need improvement. This approach fosters a more balanced and comprehensive assessment of students’ abilities, acknowledging that growth and progress may occur at different rates in different subjects.

Advertisements

In contrast, the T-score system had narrow grading bands that left minimal room for differentiation, resulting in heightened competition and stress among students. The AL system, on the other hand, embraces a broader range of performance within each band, recognizing the value of continuous improvement and accommodating variations in students’ abilities.

When we compare the AL scoring system to the traditional T-score method, we can see that the AL system offers a more inclusive and personalized evaluation of students’ abilities. It addresses the limitations of the T-score system by providing a greater margin of error and emphasizing individual growth and progress. This shift in mindset creates a healthier academic environment, where students are encouraged to pursue their passions and embrace a growth mindset.

Advertisements

As we move forward, the AL scoring system presents a promising future for primary school children, celebrating each student’s unique journey and potential. By valuing progress over perfection, the AL system prepares students for lifelong learning and personal development.

In conclusion, we, at AspirerTutor.com, firmly believe that the introduction of the AL scoring system in 2021 signifies a remarkable advancement from the T-score era. With its improved accuracy in lower tiers and emphasis on personal growth, the AL system offers a more inclusive and precise assessment of students’ abilities. This transformative shift paves the way for a more balanced, nurturing, and progressive educational environment in Singapore and beyond. Let us wholeheartedly embrace this change and strive for a brighter future in Singapore’s education landscape.
